Koppers Plants Donate Crossties for University Research

July 17, 2023
Two Koppers Railroad Products and Services facilities recently donated crossties to support university research! 🛤️
Roanoke, Virginia
The Roanoke plant donated six untreated ties to Virginia Tech researchers who are developing energy harvesting railroad ties. The research team partnered their Center for Vehicle Systems and Safety researchers with their Railway Technologies Laboratory researchers for this project.
The donated ties are equipped with small generators that capture the energy produced from each railcar wheel as it passes over a tie and converts that energy into electricity! ⚡

Galesburg, Illinois
The Galesburg plant has donated untreated end-cuts of ties to researchers at the University of Illinois’ Rail Transportation and Engineering Center (RailTEC).
RailTEC is a global leader in practical and theoretical research advancing the field of railway engineering and transportation. đźš‚
For this project, RailTEC used Koppers railroad ties to explore improved plate hold-down methods, which would increase the safety, resiliency, and reliability of track.
Thank you to the Roanoke and Galesburg plants for supporting this research and building positive relationships between Koppers and local universities!
