Koppers Highlights Sustainability Achievements Including Notable Greenhouse Gas Reduction
Koppers Stickney utilizes byproducts or intermediates to create essential, everyday products.
Our Stickney facility employees’ roles range from electrical engineers to utility operators to production managers. The facility supports nearly 400 jobs in the Greater Chicagoland area, from delivery workers to security staff and more.
At the core of our culture, across all levels of our company, is a dedication that defines us—to place the health, safety and well-being of our people, environment and communities as the guiding influence in all we do. As part of this commitment, we operate under RC14001, a comprehensive set of industry process and procedure standards that clearly outline our safety, health and environmental policies, expectations, roles and responsibilities. Additionally, our Zero Harm culture ensures we go above and beyond industry standards to prioritize our people and communities.
Koppers has invested more than $200 million in recent years to transform our Stickney facility into a more environmentally responsible operation that supports our employees, the community, and the local economy. Improvements include: $36.7 million on environmental improvement projects to further reinforce plant infrastructure against spills and leaks; $15.3 million on bolstering the reliability and effectiveness of our environmental management systems, including wastewater treatment and air emission control systems; and rearranging transport schedules to reduce truck traffic on local roads by as much as 1,200 trucks per year.
Koppers is committed to taking care of the planet by continually striving to develop more sustainable products and environmentally friendly services as part of our Zero Harm commitment. We use advanced monitoring systems to track emissions in real-time and proactively report data to regulatory bodies. Additionally, Koppers adheres to all applicable environmental regulations and standards set by federal, state, and local authorities. These regulations are designed to protect public health and the environment.
