Leadership Council

Quynh McGuire is Vice President, Investor Relations for Koppers. In this role since January 2020, she serves as the company’s primary liaison to inform and engage the investment community, while also ensuring compliance with financial disclosure regulations. Additionally, she is also actively involved in messaging and branding efforts to enhance engagement of employees and other stakeholder audiences.

Quynh joined Koppers in 2015 as Director, Investor Relations and Corporate Communications, bringing more than 25 years of experience in finance, communications, treasury and accounting roles. Prior to joining Koppers, Quynh held positions of increasing responsibility, which included leading Investor Relations at Kennametal Inc. and Duquesne Light Holdings and developing best-practice programs that strengthened relationships with the investment community.

Quynh is active in the local community, currently serving as a board member of The National Aviary, Leadership Pittsburgh Inc. and the Pittsburgh Schweitzer Fellows Program.

Quynh earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

Vice President, Investor Relations

Mr. Motley has served as Managing Partner with BlueTree Venture Fund, a venture fund based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, since April 2012. In addition, Mr. Motley has served as Chief Executive Officer and President of MCAPS, LLC, a professional services company, since January 2018. From February 2011 to July 2017, Mr. Motley served as Senior Managing Partner of Headwaters SC, a private equity advisory services company.

During his career, Mr. Motley has served in various leadership roles involving strategic planning, business group management, mergers and acquisitions, and corporate portfolio management. With more than 30 years of experience in consulting with executive management across multiple industries, Mr. Motley has been instrumental in developing corporate diversity initiatives in the U.S. and has also served as a director on various non-profit charitable and educational organizations. Mr. Motley is also an experienced board member, having served as a director of F.N.B. Corporation, a public financial services corporation, since July 2013. In addition to his board experience, Mr. Motley’s knowledge and experience in corporate strategy, mergers and acquisitions and other corporate growth initiatives deliver valuable insight to the board and enhance Mr. Motley’s ability to evaluate these matters as a member of our board.

Board Member

Mr. Neupaver has served as the Chairman and subsequently the Executive Chairman of Westinghouse Air Brake Technologies Corporation, a public company and one of the world’s largest providers of value-added, technology-based equipment and services for the global rail industry, since May 2017. From May 2014 to May 2017, Mr. Neupaver served as the Executive Chairman of Westinghouse Air Brake Technologies Corporation. From February 2006 until May 2014, Mr. Neupaver served as the President and Chief Executive Officer of Westinghouse Air Brake Technologies Corporation. His operational knowledge and leadership skills are further demonstrated by his additional public company experience at AMETEK, Inc., a leading global manufacturer of electronic instruments and electromechanical devices, where he served as the President of the electromechanical group from 1998 to February 2006.

Mr. Neupaver is also an experienced board member, having served as a director of Westinghouse Air Brake Technologies Corporation since 2006, a director of Robbins & Myers, Inc., a public company and leading supplier of engineered equipment and systems, from January 2009 to February 2013 and a director of Genesee & Wyoming Inc., a public company and owner/operator of short line and regional freight railroads, since October 2015. His other affiliations include service on the board of directors of the Carnegie Science Center, the board of trustees of the Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh and the Children’s Hospital Foundation Board. Mr. Neupaver’s experience as a chief executive officer allows him to better assess our operational risks and growth opportunities.

Board Member 

Christian Nielsen is Senior Vice President, Global Carbon Materials and Chemicals (CMC). He is responsible for driving efficiencies throughout the Global CMC organization, implementing best practices across the operational network, and leading innovative manufacturing practices to improve Koppers market position.

Most recently, Christian served as Vice President, North American and European CMC. Before that, he held the position of Vice President, European Operations and Operations Manager, European Operations. Christian is based out of the Nyborg, Denmark, facility.

Senior Vice President, Global Carbon Materials and Chemicals 

Mr. Sandifer has served as Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of FMC Corporation, a global agricultural sciences company, since May 2018. 

From March 2016 through May 2018, Mr. Sandifer served as Vice President and Treasurer of FMC Corporation. Before joining FMC Corporation, Mr. Sandifer was Vice President, Strategic Initiatives, for ARAMARK Corporation. Prior to ARAMARK, Mr. Sandifer spent seven years with Rohm and Haas Company, now part of The Dow Chemical Company, where he held roles in strategic planning, sales, marketing, investor relations, and general management. 

Earlier in his career Mr. Sandifer spent five years with the Boston Consulting Group and held engineering, operations and technical roles with International Paper and James River Paper companies. Mr. Sandifer serves on the board of trustees of Germantown Academy, a private school near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where he is a member of the finance, audit, and investment committees. He was a member of the board of directors of Philabundance, the leading hunger relief organization in the Delaware Valley, from 2014 to 2022, serving as Board Treasurer and Chair of the Finance Committee from 2017 to 2022.

Mr. Sandifer brings to the board broad international business experience guiding organizations through major transitions, including mergers and acquisitions, strategic realignment, restructuring and enterprise resource planning system implementation.

His experience spans multiple industry sectors, with an emphasis on technology-driven product and materials businesses.

Daniel J. Skrovanek is Vice President of Growth & Innovation for Koppers. In this role, he leads a team focused on challenging the organization’s thinking on growing its sales, earnings, and cash flows beyond the traditional scope of mergers and acquisitions while remaining in alignment with Koppers strategic pillars.

Dan joined Koppers in 2011 as Vice President, Strategic Planning and Growth. Since then, he has served in a variety of multifaceted roles highlighting his versatile background, most recently as Vice President of Purchasing and Strategic Marketing.

Prior to Koppers, Dan spent his career working in management for a number of organizations in the areas of strategy, operations, marketing, sales, product management, and research and development. These organizations included several large multinational companies, a startup, and in technology transfer at a major research university. Fluent in German, he spent four years in Germany, where he had global responsibility overseeing and executing strategy for a worldwide business.

Dan earned his bachelor, master, and doctoral degrees in Materials Science and Engineering from The Pennsylvania State University and an MBA from Robert Morris University. He is a graduate of Leadership Pittsburgh and has served on the boards of Variety: The Children’s Charity and the Pennsylvania Nanomaterials Commercialization Center. Dan resides with his family in the greater Pittsburgh region.

Vice President of Growth and Innovation 

Jimmi Sue Smith is the Chief Financial Officer for Koppers. In this role, she leads all aspects of the company’s global financial functions, including accounting, internal audit and control, financial shared services, financial planning and analysis, treasury, tax and investor relations.

Jimmi Sue joined Koppers in 2020 as Vice President of Finance and Treasurer, providing oversight of the global treasury management function. She was responsible for managing relationships with the company’s banking partners and bond rating agencies, leading cash forecasting and working capital management efforts, overseeing shared services and playing an integral role in M&A activities.

Prior to Koppers, Jimmi Sue spent 11 years with natural gas producer EQT, serving in a number of significant roles, including Director of Corporate Accounting, business unit VP/Controller, Chief Accounting Officer and Senior Vice President/Chief Financial Officer. Previously, she held finance roles of increasing responsibility at a number of Pittsburgh-area manufacturing companies.

Jimmi Sue graduated from West Virginia University with a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration with an Accounting concentration, and earned her law degree from the Duquesne University School of Law.

Within the Pittsburgh community, Jimmi Sue is actively involved as co-chair of the Circles Board for the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, a board member for the Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh and a member of the Executive Leadership Team for the 2022 March for Babies in support of the March of Dimes Western Pennsylvania.

Chief Financial Officer 

James A. Sullivan is President and Chief Operating Officer with responsibility for all four of Koppers business units. In addition, he oversees corporate procurement and process excellence.

Jim joined Koppers as Vice President of Business Development, Koppers Inc. in June 2013. Subsequently, he held the role of Senior Vice President, Global Carbon Materials and Chemicals (CMC), Koppers Inc. from April 2014 to May 2018. He was then elected Senior Vice President, Railroad Products and Services and Global Carbon Materials and Chemicals, Koppers Inc. from May 2018 through December 2019.

Prior to joining Koppers, Jim served as Senior Vice President, Americas at Calgon Carbon Corporation where he also held various management positions in the areas of operations, marketing, sales, and research and development.

He graduated from Ryerson University with a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering and earned his MBA from the University of Pittsburgh’s Joseph M. Katz School of Business.

Jim currently is a member of the Board of Directors for Vibrant Pittsburgh. 

President and Chief Operating Officer 

Mr. Testoni has served as a member of the board of directors of ABARTA, Inc., a private holding company, since April 2011, and was recently elected Independent Lead Director. Mr. Testoni has also served as the Lead Independent Director for Control Concepts Corporation, Inc., a family-owned business, since 2015, and as a member of the board of advisors of Henderson Brothers, Inc., a privately-held insurance agency, since December 2012. Mr. Testoni served as an executive in residence at the University of Pittsburgh Katz School of Business, a major public university, from September 2012 until June 2016. From September 2007 through June 2010, Mr. Testoni served as the Lake Erie Market Managing Partner of PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP, an international professional services firm.

Mr. Testoni’s board experience also includes his position as a member of the board of trustees of The Frick Art and Historical Center and as a member of the board of Achieving The Dream, Inc., a non-profit seeking to bring under-educated urban youth into colleges for advanced education and technical training. Mr. Testoni also previously served as Chairman of the board of trustees of the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh and as a director of the Three Rivers Chapter of the National Association of Corporate Directors, a non-profit membership group for corporate board members. In addition to his broad board experience, Mr. Testoni’s financial background offers the board a key perspective and depth on financial and accounting matters.

Mr. Tritch served as the Chief Executive Officer of Westinghouse Electric Company, a global provider of fuel, services, technology, plant design, and equipment for the commercial nuclear electric power industry, from June 2002 to June 2008. While serving in that role, Mr. Tritch had oversight of that company’s operations, financial reporting and risk analysis. During his 37 years with Westinghouse Electric Company, Mr. Tritch held a number of management positions, including Senior Vice President Fuel Business Unit, Senior Vice President Integration and Senior Vice President Services Business Unit. His business acumen and proven leadership skills developed through years of managing this international organization provide the board with an executive and leadership perspective on the management and operations of a large company with global operations.

An experienced board member, Mr. Tritch served as the Chairman of the board of Westinghouse Electric Company from June 2006 until his retirement in June 2010. He also served as Chairman of the audit committee of Westinghouse Electric Company. Mr. Tritch served as a director of The Shaw Group, Inc., a public company and a global provider of pumping systems, engineering procurement and construction services, from April 2009 to February 2013. Mr. Tritch served as a director and as Chairman of the board of Charah Solutions, Inc., a public company and leading provider of mission critical environmental and maintenance services to the power generation industry, from February 2018 to May 2021. His additional leadership roles include service as the Chairman of the board of trustees at the University of Pittsburgh and as a member of the board of trustees of the John Heinz History Center.

Chairman of the Board

Mr. Vartanian has served as the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of MSA Safety Incorporated (“MSA”), a global developer, manufacturer and supplier of safety products and software that protect people and facility infrastructures, since June 2023. As part of a planned management succession, Mr. Vartanian intends to retire as Chief Executive Officer of MSA in May 2024. Since joining MSA in 1985, Vartanian has served in a variety of roles of increased responsibility, including as President of MSA North America, and Senior Vice President and President of MSA Americas. Mr. Vartanian served as the Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of MSA from May 2020 to May 2023 and as the President and Chief Executive Officer of MSA from May 2018 to May 2020. Mr. Vartanian has served as a director of MSA since December 2017. Mr. Vartanian serves on the boards of trustees or the Manufacturers Alliances for Productivity and Innovation, the International Association of Firefighters Foundation and the Allegheny Conference on Community Development. He is also a director of the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland, Pittsburgh Branch.

Mr. Vartanian brings to the board a wealth of first-hand knowledge and experience in global markets, with particular specialization in safety-related products and practices. He has extensive executive management experience in the manufacturing industry, including in the oversight and execution of business strategy, product development, marketing, sales and finance.

Kevin Washington is Vice President, External Relations. He is responsible for leading Koppers legislative and regulatory public policy strategy, managing community outreach to strengthen the company’s relationships with key stakeholders, and overseeing the corporate communications and giving functions.

Kevin joined Koppers in June 2022 after spending 10 years leading Government Affairs for Illinois Tool Works Inc., a global diversified manufacturer of commercial and industrial products, equipment, and services. In addition to other public policy leadership roles in the private sector, Kevin began his career in the nation’s capital with appointments as Congressional staff and within the Executive Branch.

Throughout his career, Kevin has gained extensive experience in reputation management and implementing advocacy strategies in close collaboration with federal, state, and international policy makers and elected officials.

He is a member and past president of the Business-Government Relations Council.

A fifth-generation Texas native, Kevin earned a Bachelor of Arts degree with concentrations in communication studies and political science from Southwest Texas State University.
