Establishment of Koppers

Koppers has a rich tradition in manufacturing, carrying forth a name that has stood for quality and dependability through parts of two centuries. The current company, Koppers Inc., was created as Koppers Industries, Inc. in December 1988 when it acquired some of the assets of what was then called Koppers Company, Inc., in a management-led leveraged buyout. One of those assets was the "Koppers" name. The company changed its name from Koppers Industries, Inc. to Koppers Inc., in February 2003.

The Koppers Company (1912-1988)

The original Koppers Company, whose name we carry, was founded by Dr. Heinrich Koppers, a young German engineer. He had developed a new type of coke oven that could economically recover the byproduct chemicals of the coking process. American steel producers brought Dr. Koppers to the U.S. to build his ovens. The first ovens were completed in 1907 in Joliet, Illinois, and the H. Koppers Company was incorporated in Chicago in March 1912.

In 1914, these American investors purchased the majority interest in the company from Dr. Koppers and established the headquarters in Pittsburgh, PA, then the world capital of steel making.

The Koppers Company’s main businesses were architectural and construction materials, plastics, chemical and coatings, environmental control systems, engineering and construction.

Koppers Building History

The Koppers Building was built between 1927 and 1929 of Indiana limestone. Located at 436 7th Avenue, Pittsburgh, it is 475 feet tall, with 34 stories of commercial offices. Koppers occupies four floors of the building.

Early Business Development

Over the years, the Koppers Company developed many business lines connected to its original involvement in steel and coke oven construction.
