From the website of the European Chemical Industry
Council (Cefic):
"After several years of intense debate, the 1 June
2007 saw the entering into force of the new,
extensive EU Regulation on Registration, Evaluation
and Authorisation of Chemicals (REACH), thus
marking a historic milestone.
REACH will revise completely the existing legislation
on chemicals. The overall goals of the new policy are
to ensure the protection of human health and
environment, maintain the competitiveness of the
European chemical industry and prevent the
fragmentation of the internal market.
The chemical industry is thoroughly committed to
safer products and processes. In the drive for
constant improvement, it continues to invest heavily
in research and development and the application of
ever-safer technologies.
Therefore, industry wants to make REACH work, and
will play an active role in helping companies to
comply with the Regulation; various activities are
currently being carried out to this end. Furthermore,
Cefic and its members remain fully committed to
contributing and to providing expertise to the
authorities during the implementation process to keep
the right focus on workability."
